    I've owned this mower since early 2021. Let me assure you that it's not a good mower. Unreliable and overpriced. I can't mow my lawn without multiple battery charges, extra batteries are over $3OO CAD, it clogs constantly, and it does a horrible job of cutting.

    I purchased my Stihl FSA 85 10 years ago in 2014 along with Stihl’s small battery mower. Stihl going strong! I utilize a vast array of battery operated tools in my business mostly Milwaukee and a Makita. Cordless is great but they will have to be replaced unlike corded tools. I have a corded die grinder from 1948 that works like a it did from day 1. Well I assume it does because it’s 5 years older than I am. Battery operated tools will never make 77 years.

    Just wanted to say thanks for the informative video, unfortunately the wasps I had in plague numbers in our back yard were not interested in the tuna bait I prepared as they were more interested in my apple tree. I solved this by adding 4 drops of excelpet flea poison to 1/2 a bottle of Antrid, I then partially hollowed out an apple and added a few drops of the mixture into it, covered it with bird mesh to stop the birds getting to it. Worked a treat, after 2 days no more wasps.

    I think you misinterpreted the study by Harris and Etheridge. My read of it is they used a single type of bait (fipronil) but not deployed in a single bait station on the 300Ha property. Rather, the baits were put out on a 50m x 50m or 50m x 100m grid. The paper states they had 2.2 bait stations per Ha.

      Makes sense if wasps generally stick to a 500 metre radius of the nest. I too was questioning how one bait trap could cover that amount of acreage.

    Thinking about buying the two meter version of the Cosmo Bully for my Kubota MX5200. I’m not sure if it will be too big but I’d like to get the mower a bit more offset from the tractor to mow between trees in rows.

    • @muckleman
      @muckleman 2 місяці тому

      I would be very hesitant about using a mower of that size on a 50hp tractor. The 1750 seems well matched, but it can slow down in longer grass. I think anything bigger would be too big. The offset may seem small (at 30cm), but it is surprisingly effective. Feel free to ask more questions if it helps.

    • @kdegraa
      @kdegraa 2 місяці тому

      @@muckleman the salesman thinks the 2 meter version would work on my tractor. The two meter Cosmo Bully weighs just under 500kg. The three point hitch is rated at lifting at around 1200kg so there should not be a problem there. The next issue would be if the PTO has the oomph to spin the machine. I guess it would but maybe I'd have to take it slowly. I generally do mow in low range and take it slowly as I have an orchard and need to take care around the trees.

    Try flipping the work tray mounting brackets with each other so that the anti-rattle bolts push from the other direction, or leave them out altogether. it might be enough to change the angle of the tray. Agree with what you say about the thick foot plate and vertical splitting. I made my own platform that slips around the foot to make a relatively level area for the big rounds to sit on.

    • @AustralianPaddock
      @AustralianPaddock 4 місяці тому

    Great review! Have you tried extending the Ram when you ant to move the splitter into the vertical position? I find it much easier. (Retract it when going back to horizontal.) I have the Edison/Baumr version. I swapped the work tray to the same side as yours, then added a bar to the side of the tray to stop timber falling off the tray.

    • @AustralianPaddock
      @AustralianPaddock 4 місяці тому

      Not yet. I'll give that a go next time. The stuff I am splitting is just light enough to manage in the horizontal position which is much easier (for me).

    our 2023 vintage here in the US was great, 2024 has potential to end up being a good vintage because we are getting a lot of rain, and the vines are not struggling as much with drought. And its generally been cool which helps maintain better acidity and lower brix so wines are not quite as alcoholic.

    • @AustralianPaddock
      @AustralianPaddock 4 місяці тому

      Which part of the US. Presumable California?? I suppose it was a good vintage because you had Il Nino while we have La Nina? Regads 2024. Obviously its a balancing act. Our 2024 has been great with high levels of rain early in the growing season and then nothing for over 2 months, meaning we could control the irrigation. We picked today (4th March) and it looks great. Baume 11.2, pH 3.12. Perfect for a Rose.

    Hi Richard, I’ve really enjoyed this informative video. Especially learning that expensive equipment is not required to get the job done. I’m also in Central Victoria with 13 rows of Shiraz grapes desperately needing protection from the very greedy birds around here. I’m interested to know what width of netting you use for protecting a single row and also wondering if you could advise me on the width of netting I might need to cover two rows at a time. My rows are 3m apart and the top of vines after trimming is about my height (1.8m). So, theoretically, 8m width should be just enough to reach ground (plus a bit) on both sides. Also wondering if you think those plastic containers (200 -220l by the look of them) would hold 100m of 8 or 10m wide netting. Would welcome any thoughts you might have. Cheers.

    • @AustralianPaddock
      @AustralianPaddock 5 місяців тому

      Thanks for the question. Our rows are also 3m apart with a height of 1.8. The nets we have are 6m wide. When you put them on, make sure that you have two people to pull them out to their full width as they come delivered stretched in the other direction. If you cut it unstretched, allow 50% more length than the row. We had a a bit too much netting left over the first time because it wasn't pulled out hard enough. As for 2 rows, that is really hard to apply and remove without netting equipment designed for two rows at a time. You need about 10 to 12m of netting in width. We also have the netting with a black stripe down the middle which is invaluable to getting the nets on in the right spot, especially with friends helping who need a clear indicator. I hope this helps. Cheers.

      Thanks for the comment. It's a simple design, bolted to a carry all on the tractor. The vertical and lower angle are 40mm SHS with the extension able to slide inside. Check what sizes you have locally. It doesn't need a lot of strength.nthe hoops are just bent round steel. Plus a piece of chain and a hook to hold it in place and adjust the angle. It's set up for my tractor and row spacing (3 metres, so you would need to make it for your own layout. Happy to answer any questions you have.

    I have had mine for 6 years ! The oil coming out is means its overfull for starters there is no pressure in the tank thats why it has a breather ,Its just to full and should be down 40-50mm from the filler hole too allow for expansion of the oil when very hot , The wood i have put over mine in that time has been some of the hardest ,knottiest timber ever it has split everything to the point i though some of the wood would break the machine it hasn't &under pressure i have had wood flying off the machine due to the pressure and knottiests of woods ! The wind up jockey wheel is there for looks? Why are you lifting it onto the hitch ? If you move the axle forward ,when you stand it up to cut the wheels of timber it will topple over ,as for the tray take the adjustment bolts out and park it level the tray will then droop outwards ! Whoever said about always parking it on a lean doesn't have any idea ,it should only be fill with hydraulic oil to the required level ! We have 8 of these in our friends group ,and not one problem

    Interesting about the table - the table on my splitter was fitted to the other side (the side with the control lever), so if I have it slanted to keep the pressure relief higher, the table slopes away and the wood stays in place. The catch rail supports also have holes drilled on both sides for the table mounts, so you should just be able to flip it around to the other side also. As for the weight, yeah it's heavy, and can only just tilt it to vertical mode on my own. However, the jockey wheel should wind up and down to help you get it on the hitch rather than lifting it?

    • @Telukin
      @Telukin Рік тому

      Also, horizontal to vertical and back again is MUCH easier if you extend the wedge to it's full extension - it becomes much more balanced and easier to lift, as not all the weight is on the back of the machine.

As mine is a standard pipe thread, and I'd say yours is as well, the solution was to buy a six inch extension pipe which are already threaded from a plumbers shop. You'll need a cap as well and also you will have to drill a hole in the top of the pipe just under where the cap screws on for the breather hole. You will still have to have the splitter fairly level though in any case. It looks like you will have to get the welder out and modify the angle on the plate up top. It should be fairly easy. The Troybilt is not so heavy to lift onto a towball, but I fitted a jockey wheel to it anyway. I mostly operate my splitter vertically. It has never had any problem splitting any type of wood, even narly old Box. I find that if the block is very tough, the splitter will keep going until the block explodes apart. I have suffered a few painful shin injuries until I bought shin guards which I wear when splitting and even when using the chainsaw. They are hard plastic and won't stop a saw chain, but do stop blocks of wood causing injuries when out in the scrub. I think your splitter is about 25 ton? Maybe you can tell me. By the look of the wood, it's doing a good job. Maybe good firewood, what type is it? By the way, I think you'll love the Honda, I have three, a 5hp on the elevator, the 9hp on the splitter and a 13hp on the woodchipper and they are very reliable. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed seeing an Aussie using a splitter for a change.

      Thanks the advice and everything else you wrote. They only quote the pressure in PSI (3000) rather than the tonnage, so its hard to compare with other brands. Some of those trees I'm splitting were planted 25 years ago by someone else and they are not local, so I have no idea! Some burn better than others and some have the bark come off easier than others. Looks like I need to get the angle grinder and the welder out. Cheers.

    Great video! Would you consider doing a basic service video / what you do for regular maintenance at home?

    Tempted to have one of these shipped to the US. Even though the voltage is different, shouldn’t it work here since it runs on makita batteries?

      I'm not sure the units worth it. I will do a follow up review. But in terms of working in the US - I think the batteries are the same but the charger might be different. The overall unit will work with the batteries. But because the US uses different power to most countries, I can't really say exactly.

    Complete failure ... nest hidden in roof so this seemed the perfect approach. Wasps completely ignored any bait: cat food, meat, peanut butter/honey, etc etc etc ... Not a single wasp lured to the bait which was 1.5m from the wasp entry points to the nest. Just had to continue blocking off entry points and spraying wasps in the areas. Took over a week.

    Thanks for this, we're considering transitioning to a battery powered mower and it's so helpful to see and gear it in action along with your perspective. Definitely the future.

      Thanks. Yes, I would never go back to fuel. I had to put the mower in the back of the car the other day. No fuel, no oil, no mess. And I can just pick it up by myself. Try doing that with a 4-stroke.
